RISD Language Instructional Education Programs

Roswell Independent School District (RISD) has provided three models of language instructional programs to English language learners (ELLs), and interested students.  The programs include: a 2-hour Developmental Maintenance Bilingual Education (DMBE) program, a 1-hour Enrichment Bilingual Education Program, and an English as a Second Language Program (ESL).  The schools implementing a 2-hour DMBE program include four elementary schools (East Grand Plains, Nancy Lopez, Pecos and Sunset), three middle schools (Berrendo, Mesa, and Mountain View), and two high schools (Goddard and Roswell).  The DMBE program is for ELLs only.  The ELLs in the program receive a minimum of 45-60 minutes daily instruction in the Spanish language arts or Spanish for native speakers.  Additionally, they receive a minimum of 45-60 minutes daily instruction in ESL or ELD depending upon their English proficiency level per the NMELPA. A 1-hour Enrichment Bilingual Education program is for ELLs with fluent English proficiency and also for other non ELLs who are interested in learning/enriching the Spanish language and cultures.  All middle and high school implement this program, except UHS.  Students in the program receive a minimum of a period of daily instruction in Spanish, Spanish Language Arts, Spanish Literature, Honor Spanish, or AP Spanish depending upon their Spanish language proficiency level.  The schools that do not implement the Bilingual Education program provide the ESL and ELD instruction to ELLs.  These students are provided the ESL/ELD instruction in different formats including immersion ESL, pull-out and content-based by teachers endorsed in TESOL or trained in Specially Designed Academic Instruction in English (SDAIE).  RISD 's Language Instructional Education Program goals are:

  • To develop English language proficiency for English language learners so they will be able to use the language to communicate effectively and appropriately for all life's requirements, both social and academic.
  • To promote bilingualism and biliterate for English language learners and other interested students.
  • To promote student's positive self-concept and cross-cultural understanding.
  • To provide equal educational opportunity to all students to meet the same state content standards and benchmarks in all subjects.
