Here we are, getting ready for another exciting
year for the Berrendo Middle
Band.” It promises to be a good year and
I’m looking forward to working with all of you.
This is the handbook for the band, and it will also be serving as the basic
syllabus for all band classes taught at BMS.
As such, it is very important that both students and parents take the
time to go through and read this handbook. If you have any questions or
comments, feel free to use my contact information at the bottom of this page. I am
looking forward to a fantastic and exciting year.

Mission Statement: The
band will use music for the personal growth of all students. We will endeavor to play the highest quality
repertoire with the greatest amount of sensitivity and musicality. We will be an important part of the community
by providing free concerts, and using the band to transform ourselves into
better people and thus better members of the community. Our primary concern will always be creating a
safe and fun environment in which everyone can learn about music.
Expectation for commitment:
Because the success of a band is heavily influenced by
the consistent success of its members, all students who enroll in band are
expected to commit to being in band for the full year.

Percussion students in the advanced classes will need to purchase
specific sizes of sticks and mallets for the purposes of ensemble sound.

7. Percussion students will be working out of the Snare drummers toolbox and the Mallet players toolbox. These books will be provided, however if any damage occurs to the books the student will be responsible for replacing them.
Students in the advanced band will need to purchase
a flip folder and a lyre to hold their music at the football games
Grades will be determined on the following factors.
Participation- 10 pts a week.
Students start with 10 points at the beginning of every week. For every negative in the check book, 2
points will be deducted.
Paperwork- 10pts per assignment.
This will include getting forms signed and returned, as well as
occasional worksheets. These grades will
be taken on occasion
Playing Tests- 15 points per test:
These tests will be taken weekly.

Practice Records- 10 points per week:
Students will be required to keep a record of their practice time each
week for a grade. These must be turned
in on the last school day of the week, and the student is responsible for
picking up a new practice record.
Un-signed records will receive a score of 0.
Performance- 100pts per performance.
Performances in band may be thought of as equivalent to test grades in
other classes. They are very important
as they are both the students opportunity to show off what they have learned in
the year, as well as counting as a substantial grade in every grading period. Please note that football games are performance grades as well as all concerts throughout the year.
absences will be accepted for personal illness, death in the family, conflict
with other school activities, and academic ineligibility (applies only
to some activities). Absences will not be excused for reasons such as
transportation problems, conflicts with non-school activities, and other
reasons. Communication about conflicts should take place no less than two
days prior to the conflict. Please
ask to receive a complete semester calendar of all your activities so that you
can have the maximum amount of time to resolve potential schedule
conflicts. It is the student’s
responsibility to be aware of the most current calendar of band activities. Excused absences must be made up within one
week of the original absence. Students
should see the director for an appropriate assignment. I will not “chase down” a student to make
sure they have their make-up work!!!
Unexcused absences may not be made up and will receive a lower grade.
Please follow this policy carefully. Absences from performances by any student
affect the full band’s quality of performance.
