Dear RISD Families and Staff,
This letter is to make you aware of a recent cybersecurity incident involving PowerSchool, a third-party software vendor, impacting school districts across the state of New Mexico and country. PowerSchool provides the Student Information System (SIS) to districts across the nation including Roswell Independent School District (RISD).
PowerSchool contacted RISD via email late Wednesday, January 8, 2025, that they experienced a potential cybersecurity incident involving unauthorized access to certain PowerSchool SIS customer data. An investigation was being conducted by the company to determine potential compromised data. RISD received notice that the tables exported were the Students and Teachers table that may or may not have included data such as social security numbers (SSN), phone numbers, address, and other information. PowerSchool is working with urgency to complete their investigation by working with their IT vendor to have a finalized forensic report as soon as they are able.
According to recent communication from PowerSchool, they will be providing affected customers with a communications package that will help support impacted schools’ efforts in engaging with families, teachers, and other stakeholders around this incident.
Protecting our students and staff is a matter we take seriously. With PowerSchool's help, more information and resources (including credit monitoring or identity protection services if applicable) will be provided as it becomes available. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
