Parents, Students and Staff,

I am sure you are aware of the announcement from the Governor last week. Our
district will not be allowed to start school in-person, in a hybrid model (A/B) schedule
after Labor Day (Sept. 8th 2020). In order for school districts to be eligible to bring
students back for in-person learning, counties must meet the state’s criteria: the
positivity test rates must fall below 5% and new daily case rates must be below 8 per
100,000. We also learned that the state will no longer allow gaiters as alternatives to
masks. As a reminder all staff, students, and visitors must wear a mask on school sites.
RISD has purchased two masks for each student; these will be distributed when we are
allowed to return to in-person learning.

Parents, we want to thank you for your patience with our technical issues the first few
days of school. This type of teaching is new for students, teachers, administrators, and
it certainly has its limitations in comparison to direct instruction in the classroom. We
want all our students in school and we have been working hard to meet the state’s
requirements for students to return to the classroom, but that will not happen until
Chaves County falls below the 5% infection rate per 100,000. We ask for your help in
encouraging our community to adhere to the Department of Health guidelines for
Coronavirus, in an effort to decrease our infection rates and positive test cases, so we
can return to in-person instruction.

At this time, and until further notice Roswell ISD will continue with remote and virtual
learning in anticipation of an announcement from the Public Education Department
and New Mexico Department of Health, which allows RISD to return face-to-face

Michael Gottlieb
